Palworld’s Sakurajima update massively expanded the game when it launched on June 27, update, 2024. Although most of the new content can be found within the new Sakurajima region, one of the biggest additions is tucked away on the other side of the map—an Oil Rig Stronghold with a staggering amount of enemies and one-of-a-kind dangers. That might not sound very appealing at first, but the rare materials and potential legendary weapon schematics hiding on board probably will.

A map shows the location of the Oil Rig.

The Oil Rig Stronghold is located southeast of Marsh Island. While the general shape of it is visible from Windswept Hills, you’ll see it clearly and be closest if you use the Marsh Island Fast Travel point. The coordinates of the Oil Rig Stronghold are 540, -420.

Take The Right Gear And Pals With You

The Oil Rig is home to scores of max-level Rayne Syndicate members and their Pals. There are also huge turrets and lasers to keep you grounded and running for cover. Everything here should be considered endgame content that is meant to overwhelm. You’re free to tackle these whenever you want and it’s certainly easier with other players, but you’ll be better off attempting once you’re past Level 50.

This Stronghold is more than manageable if you’re prepared and having the highest-quality gear. A Guided Missile Launcher, for example, will go a long way here. A regular Rocket Launcher (preferably of the Epic or Legendary rarities) can also help you out a ton.

I’d also recommend crafting a Plasteel Armor and Helmet set to give you some much-needed protection. If you’ve already managed to unlock one or both of the locked accessory slots, loading up on pendants can further increase your survival odds. A Hyper Grappling Gun won’t hurt to have either. Jumping off a platform and grappling between the pipes and such is a good way to avoid enemies for a few moments. It’s also pretty fun, but that might just be me and my desperation for a new Titanfall game.

Unless you’re planning on taking a team of Gobfins with you to the Stronghold, your Pals should be past level 50. Make room for a Dogen, as their ability to teleport you to your closest base can come in clutch whether you’re done looting the base or need to make a dramatic escape. You’ll also need a Flying Mount Pal and/or one for Swimming to reach the base and its some high towers. Prioritize Pals with high HP to soak damage, such as Legendary Alpha Pals.

How To Safely Approach The Oil Rig

Although flying is the quickest and most effective way to travel to new places, The Oil Rig Stronghold has defenses for that. Flying within 350 meters will trigger anti-air laser cannons that can stunlock your Pal and inflict a ton of damage. This can one-shot your flying friend if you’re not careful.

Those who still want to fly in can do it with some dedication and skill. A Jetragon with hefty movement buffing passives can avoid the lasers with no problem. A safer and more accessible method is to fly as high as possible and then jump off to glide toward the base. The lasers only target flying mounts, leaving you safe to land as you glide down.

The easiest and safest method of all is to forego flying altogether and use a Swimming Mount Pal. While it is a bit slower than flying and will require some patience, this method won’t trigger the cannons. Azurobe and Jormuntide are your best choices here.

Start Blasting And Disable The Big Guns

Your arrival will trigger a base alarm and alert all of the Syndicate members. Even though Palworld’s AI doesn’t always put up the biggest challenge, you should be prepared to start fighting soon after stepping foot on the oil rig. Explosion-centric weapons such as Rocket Launchers and Guided Missile Launchers are useful here not just for their damage, but also for their AoE. Sending enemies over the rails is just as effective as killing them too.

The giant turrets littered all over the oil rig will be the biggest annoyances here. Thankfully, their accuracy is pretty bad in my experience, but they hit hard and there are enough to threaten you and your Pal’s health. Don’t waste ammo on them as they don’t take damage through attacks. Instead, run up to them and interact with a console to destroy them.

Laser Cannons work the same way: You’ll have to destroy them through an interaction prompt instead of traditional firepower. This can be especially stressful as they’re commonly surrounded by a group of turrets ready to shoot at you. Aim to destroy as many as possible to give yourself more breathing room and the assurance that you can finally fly around without worrying about your Pal being shredded.

Loot Everything And Find The Large Chest

Once you’ve taken out a majority of the threats, you can focus on looting. Small chests can be found all over the oil rig. Check inside tents, shipping containers, and even the highest towers..

The oil rig’s big chest is perhaps the most exciting. This thing is more akin to a large crate or even a Death Box from Apex Legends when compared to normal chests in Palworld. Here, you can find rare weapon schematics, crude oil, large Lotus materials, and even Ancient Civilization Cores that you typically can only receive from raid bosses. Everything you go through on this oil rig is worth it for this chest.

Finding the big chest can be difficult though. Only one spawns at a time and there are four possible locations for it. Check these areas if you’re having trouble spotting it on your own:

  • On the West side inside the tent to the right. The left tent will have a normal-size treasure chest
  • On the central platform inside a blue building. You’ll know it’s the right one if it rests on top of another small building and has a turret on top
  • Within the lower floors on the East side
  • Between the various shipping containers on the Southeast side

You can head out back to the main map once you’ve looted enough. Everything should respawn after 30 minutes or around one in-game day with default settings. If you just want to farm for the big chest on later runs, simply rush in and check all of the possible spawn locations. Make sure to throw out a Pal to tank damage while you go through the lengthy interact sequences;. 10 seconds feels like a damn eternity when a bunch of level 55 enemies are trying to kill you.

Palworld’s Sakurajima update has added many instances of more difficult challenges whether it’s new bosses or this Oil Rig. Beating them and taking their rewards is a great way to level up and discover better tools to handle this wacky world’s dangers.
